What is shadowboxing?
Shadowboxing is an important part of a boxer's training. It helps you to develop your coordination, timing and footwork, as well as your ability to throw punches in different directions. Shadowboxing is also a great way to get in shape and practice your boxing technique outside of the ring.
The best way to start shadowboxing is by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and your hands up at face level. You should have a slight bend in your knees and keep your weight balanced on both feet. Now slowly move around the room while throwing punches at different angles into the air. You want your hand movements and footwork to be as smooth as possible, so that when you go into sparring or actual fighting, everything will feel natural and easy.
Shadowboxing Tips For A Boxer
1. Keep your hands up
2. Move your feet, not just your arms.
Move around, but don't lose your balance: keep yourself centered and balanced throughout the whole process.
3. Use different combinations of punches.
Try to work each round on different thematic.
4. Use different level ( up & down)
Don't forget to work on both levels up and down - thus it will be more difficult for your opponent to protect.
5. Change angle after each attack
6. Visualize your opponent.
If you feel like your opponent is getting too close or trying to block too much, then make sure that you adjust accordingly by using different punches, feints, and angles of attack.
7. Practice shadow boxing with weight & without
You should feel an instant improvement in your speed after using weights. Make this a regular part of your shadow boxing and these improvements in punching speed will be for the long term.
Shadowboxing empowers you to try out many of the skills of boxing before using those skills on a heavy bag or indeed a live opponent. The best part of shadowboxing is that you can do it almost anywhere, and you don’t need any special gear or equipment. Happy Training!
